Occupied Rewire

August 2021

During this project, moving out was too much of an inconvenience for our customer. Rewiring a house that is still occupied takes more work. Additional cleaning and dust containment are required. We installed temporary power distribution to supply power throughout the work. Additionally, when working around occupants, safety risks must be more tightly managed to prevent injury from construction site hazards.

We started by wiring the back of the house and the fuseboard. Then the customer could move into the back of the house whilst we completed the front. It’s not often we finish second fix in one area before beginning first fix in another.

Please feel free to flick through the gallery below for pictures taken throughout this project.

Sockets

Bedroom Socket

Designed to be above bedside cabinets.

Bedroom Sockets

Designed to be above bedroom cabinets and on either side of the bed.

Living Room Sockets

Plenty of sockets to supply the TV/Media area on the right and a reptile tank on the left.

Living Room Sockets

This was a difficult one. The furniture was too big to move. We managed to install this one with limited working space.

Extractor Socket

This one is dedicated to the extractor. We recommend adding a separate switch to control the extractor from the worktop level.

Cooker Circuit

A separate circuit for the oven. Cooker outlets can provide power for cooking equipment up to 15kW. This oven is only 2kW and is using the 3 pin plug.

Kitchen Sockets

No tiles were damaged due to the way we installed these sockets.

Switches

Neutral To The Switch

All switches were provided with a neutral connection to allow for smart switches in the future.

Bathroom & Landing Together?

Switch for landing and bathroom lights. Its strangely common to see bathroom and landing lights together. We can install switches inside the bathroom but it’s not normal practice.

Bonding Chases

We backfilled the chases to provide a temporary finish because the plastering won’t be done for a while. We can happily provide this service but we always recommend that a professional plasterer do the work instead.

No Chase Required

As the original wiring was done in conduit we were able to pull new cables down to some switches without opening up the wall.

Surface Switch

This downstairs WC has exposed brick. We install on the surface in this scenario.

Switch Drops

In rooms with one light, we installed 3 core and earth switch drops. This gives more flexibility for future changes. A second switch can be added in the future with minimal effort.

Lights

LED Lamps

We provided LED lamps for all the pendants.

Kitchen Lighting

The customer provided this stylish light fitting for the kitchen.

Lamp Shades

This customer loves iridescent colours. We’re always happy to fit shades along with new pendants.

Batten Lamp Holders

This is in the downstairs WC. Batten lamp holders are ideal because if a bulb fails it can be changed very easily.

Bulkhead Light

This round bulkhead light in the bathroom provides plenty of bright light from one single fitting.

Bedroom Pendant

We used the ‘three plate method’ or traditional ‘loop in/out’ method to rewire the bedroom lights.

Ceiling Rose

We loved being able to renovate these classic decorative plaster ceiling roses.

More

Consumer Unit

We installed a FuseBox board with type A RCBO’s and type 2 surge protection. Our go-to setup at the moment.

Consumer Unit

Meter tails, earthing and earth bonding was fully renewed.

Maximum Demand

The supply is limited to 60A. This was fine. The energy supplier would need to upgrade this if an electric shower or car charger were to be installed.

The Outbuilding

We opted for metal-clad accessories in the shed.  This provides better mechanical protection and looks a lot neater too.

The Outbuilding

Again we used a batten lamp holder to allow for easy maintenance.

Heating Circuit

The boiler is powered by a separate circuit to the sockets to allow for better segregation.
